The Career Pivot

If you are thinking about transitioning to a new career later in your professional journey, you are not alone.

The long and winding road

There are many turning points in a woman's career, sometimes of choice and other times you are just a passenger traveling along unsure of your destination. As time moves along you learn and grow and the more you understand about yourself and where your priorities and passions lie. Maybe you woke up one day and realized you are not fulfilled and want to make a change in your career towards what excites you and gives you purpose. You know, that feeling that you actually want to wake up early and seize the day? Yeah, me too - and I did it! I took the leap and it was terrifying but I didn't die and I'm here to tell you that it can be done. You'll need to prepare yourself because this takes some audacious courage and a few added "coins" in your pocket. (More about that later).

Career change can be challenging on many levels and for many of us it's layered in uncertainty. Some of us might feel restricted by age or experience, while others are paralyzed by the fear of not being able to find our dream job. Whatever it is that's causing you to hesitate I want to encourage you to read on and seek out the support that can elevate you to your next chapter and make sure that what follows is nothing short of a career renaissance.

What will it take?

You are going to need 6 "coins" to get where you want to be. I don't use this term to refer to money, although you may need some of that to assist you in your efforts, rather, I consider it a symbol representing a valued asset which gives you a beneficial advantage in achieving your goal. You can carry these coins with you everywhere you go and when strategically used you will always have the courage and stamina you need for success. Once you collect them you can save them, invest them and spend them as often as needed and be truly "rich" in the value they will bring you. The dividends never run out.

  1. Intention - Harness the power of a focused objective to create mindful intention for impactful and life changing results. By directing this new clarity you will be able to create the impulse of awareness that contains the seed form of that which you aim to create. Like real seeds, intentions can’t grow if you hold on to them. Only when you release your intentions into the fertile depths of your consciousness can they grow and flourish. In short - you must act.

  2. Support - Gather a system of support that will encourage you, advise you and at times even educate you. I always advise my clients to get started with a Board of Angels. This is a personal group of trusted advisers who have your back. These can be friends, family, peers, mentors or spiritual influencers that only want your highest good. They will come in handy when times get tough to give you a hug and, at times, a wake-up call. Other types of support can come from accountability partners, mentors, coaches or any other person who can give you advice along the way. Do you need to add to your skill set? Proper support can also come in the form of education and training and if you are transitioning later in life you'll meet others who are in the same boat as you. Life changes quickly and you must stay up to date so you can be fresh in your talents and relevant no matter what career path you choose.

  3. Strategy - You've heard it before: If you fail to plan, you plan to fail. This statement is absolute truth no matter what the goal is. You simply cannot wing it and if your ego tells you otherwise you may eventually get what you want but I guarantee you will learn the hard way. If you are determined to succeed you must have a structured plan in writing. You must identify the goal, define the means of getting there, set a realistic plan in place, take the actions necessary, properly evaluate your progress and revise as needed. Depending on the actual goal this can be a short and simple task-oriented plan or a multi-dimensional strategy that is progressive over time. Don't be afraid to reach out and ask for help in creating your vision of things to come. Share this with your Board of Angels for feedback, ideas and advice. Many have been where you are and you'll be surprised at what you learn about those closest to you and what they have to offer.

  4. Discipline - There is great motivation in setting intention and you will experience endorphin-boosting confidence when you build your own support squad. Creating a plan of action can be exciting and even fun when you are brainstorming and envisioning possibilities for yourself. You've diligently prepared and now it's GO time. You launch your grand plan and everything is sailing along. Legs up on the desk, leaning back with your hands clasped behind your head...aaaaah. Things are happening exactly as they should and life is good! This is a great place to be but this is also the stage when we risk becoming idle and distracted from our goal. Or... maybe things aren't going as planned and you are experiencing setbacks and frustrations. In either scenario you are going to have to remain focused and keep distractive thoughts at bay. It is very easy to let off the gas or even give up and accept what is because pushing forward is hard. It requires stamina and diligence to keep going and some days, you just don't feel like it. Life is all about choices and if you abandon your plan you choose to abandon your goal. You can always restart but now you've lost valuable time - and none of us ever has enough of that. By engaging your discipline and calling an emergency board meeting you can stay focused, modify your plan if needed and keep moving forward.

  5. Winning Attitude - To win at life you must have a winning attitude. You are not always going to wake up on the right side of the bed but you must always know that you can do anything you set your mind to. Whether you are in the mood or not, the point is that with a spirit of positivity you can if you want. Your cup can either be half full or half empty, either way it's up to you. I say if it's half empty, fill it with wine and be open to the possibilities!

  6. Resilience - A good friend once told me to be more like a duck. I was having an attitude and pouting because I wasn't getting my way and taking things much too personally. He said "Sometimes you are going to get wet. You just have to let the water roll off your back and keep on swimming". This was much needed advice and I have never forgotten it. You have to find a certain strength when it comes to change. You are not always going to know what the right direction is so you will have to engage in some good old fashioned trial and error. Try this...if it doesn't work, try that... and if that doesn't work, try door number three. The point is that failure can be the best thing to happen so you can learn what the right thing is. Be open, pay attention and don't ever, EVER give up. Keep on swimming.

You may already have a few coins in your pocket and if so, good for you, you are well on your way! Continue to increase the value of the coins you currently have and selfishly (go ahead, it's OK) go out and collect the ones you need. Keep in mind that no woman is an island unto herself - although we sure wish we had one to escape to. Do not, I repeat, do not travel this journey alone. You will need to account for your own choices and actions but you will need others to support you, guide you, love you and celebrate with you at each and every win.
